Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At MTQ (SGX:M05)
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at MTQ (SGX:M05) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for MTQ:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.069 = S$7.0m ÷ (S$121m - S$18m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Therefore, MTQ has an ROCE of 6.9%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Energy Services industry average of 11%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For MTQ Tell Us?
MTQ has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 153% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
In another part of our analysis, we noticed that the company's ratio of current liabilities to total assets decreased to 15%, which broadly means the business is relying less on its suppliers or short-term creditors to fund its operations. So shareholders would be pleased that the growth in returns has mostly come from underlying business performance.
What We Can Learn From MTQ's ROCE
In summary, we're delighted to see that MTQ has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. Considering the stock has delivered 1.7% to its stockholders over the last five years, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
