Waystream Holding AB (publ) (STO:WAYS) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 34% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 43% over that time.

Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in Sweden have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 21x, you may consider Waystream Holding as a stock to avoid entirely with its 40.9x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Waystream Holding's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Waystream Holding's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Waystream Holding's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 67%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 56% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 195% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 24%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we can see why Waystream Holding is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

Waystream Holding's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Waystream Holding maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
