Mycronic's (STO:MYCR) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
Mycronic AB (publ) (STO:MYCR) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 14th of May to SEK7.50. The payment will take the dividend yield to 1.4%, which is in line with the average for the industry.
Mycronic's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. However, prior to this announcement, Mycronic's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 4.7%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 44% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was SEK4.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of SEK5.50. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 3.2% over that duration. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Mycronic has impressed us by growing EPS at 26% per year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
We Really Like Mycronic's Dividend
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
