Be Wary Of Mycronic (STO:MYCR) And Its Returns On Capital
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So while Mycronic (STO:MYCR) has a high ROCE right now, lets see what we can decipher from how returns are changing.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Mycronic:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.30 = kr1.8b ÷ (kr9.1b - kr2.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Therefore, Mycronic has an ROCE of 30%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 16% earned by companies in a similar industry.

So How Is Mycronic's ROCE Trending?
In terms of Mycronic's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. While it's comforting that the ROCE is high, five years ago it was 43%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
Our Take On Mycronic's ROCE
While returns have fallen for Mycronic in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 181% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
