There wouldn't be many who think Empir Group AB (publ)'s (STO:EMPIR B) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the IT industry in Sweden is similar at about 0.9x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Empir Group Has Been Performing

Empir Group certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. The P/S is probably moderate because investors think this strong revenue growth might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Empir Group's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, we see the company's revenues grew exponentially. The latest three year period has also seen a 24% overall rise in revenue, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth, although potentially wondering why there's so much variation in revenue growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 9.6% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that Empir Group is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What We Can Learn From Empir Group's P/S?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Empir Group revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's hard to accept the current share price as fair value.

Having said that, be aware Empir Group is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those are a bit unpleasant.
