These 4 Measures Indicate That Fastighets AB Trianon (STO:TRIAN B) Is Using Debt Extensively
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that Fastighets AB Trianon (publ) (STO:TRIAN B) does use debt in its business. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. How Healthy Is Fastighets AB Trianon's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Fastighets AB Trianon had liabilities of kr2.69b due within a year, and liabilities of kr6.15b falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of kr63.9m and kr124.8m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling kr8.65b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the kr3.81b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. On the face of it, Fastighets AB Trianon's net debt to EBITDA left us tentative about the stock, and its level of total liabilities was no more enticing than the one empty restaurant on the busiest night of the year. But at least it's pretty decent at converting EBIT to free cash flow; that's encouraging. We're quite clear that we consider Fastighets AB Trianon to be really rather risky, as a result of its balance sheet health. So we're almost as wary of this stock as a hungry kitten is about falling into its owner's fish pond: once bitten, twice shy, as they say. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it.
