For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like MedCap (STO:MCAP), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide MedCap with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

MedCap's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. It certainly is nice to see that MedCap has managed to grow EPS by 33% per year over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away satisfied.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. MedCap shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 9.8% to 12%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in our book.

Since MedCap is no giant, with a market capitalisation of kr2.8b, you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are MedCap Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's said that there's no smoke without fire. For investors, insider buying is often the smoke that indicates which stocks could set the market alight. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

We note that MedCap insiders spent kr1.9m on stock, over the last year; in contrast, we didn't see any selling. That's nice to see, because it suggests insiders are optimistic. It is also worth noting that it was Investment Manager Lars Ångman who made the biggest single purchase, worth kr828k, paying kr166 per share.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for MedCap bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at kr681m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 25% of the company, the co-investment by insiders fosters confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

Is MedCap Worth Keeping An Eye On?

You can't deny that MedCap has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Not only that, but we can see that insiders both own a lot of, and are buying more shares in the company. These things considered, this is one stock worth watching. Now, you could try to make up your mind on MedCap by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.

The good news is that MedCap is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
