Actic Group AB (publ)'s (STO:ATIC) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 29%

Actic Group AB (publ) (STO:ATIC) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 29% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 5.3% isn't as attractive.

Although its price has surged higher, when close to half the companies operating in Sweden's Hospitality industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.8x, you may still consider Actic Group as an enticing stock to check out with its 0.2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Actic Group Has Been Performing

It looks like revenue growth has deserted Actic Group recently, which is not something to boast about. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to worsen, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Actic Group will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Actic Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Still, the latest three year period was better as it's delivered a decent 9.4% overall rise in revenue. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 14% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Actic Group's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Actic Group's P/S?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Actic Group's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Actic Group confirms that the company's revenue trends over the past three-year years are a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, as we suspected, given they fall short of current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
