Benign Growth For BTS Group AB (publ) (STO:BTS B) Underpins Stock's 26% Plummet

The BTS Group AB (publ) (STO:BTS B) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 40% share price drop.

Even after such a large drop in price, BTS Group may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.6x, since almost half of all companies in Sweden have P/E ratios greater than 24x and even P/E's higher than 39x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

BTS Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, BTS Group would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 46% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 61% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 8.7% each year during the coming three years according to the dual analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 18% per annum, which paints a poor picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that BTS Group's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

The Final Word

BTS Group's P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that BTS Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

You need to take note of risks, for example - BTS Group has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
