Quite a few insiders have dramatically grown their holdings in Saab AB (publ) (STO:SAAB B) over the past 12 months. An insider's optimism about the company's prospects is a positive sign.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Saab Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Employee Representative Director Stefan Andersson bought kr8.8m worth of shares at a price of kr370 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (kr592), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid kr17m for 43.42k shares. But they sold 28.90k shares for kr16m. In total, Saab insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. Saab is not the only stock insiders are buying. So take a peek at this free list of growing companies with insider buying.

Saab Insiders Bought Stock Recently

There was some insider buying at Saab over the last quarter. In total, insiders bought kr1.3m worth of shares in that time. However, they netted kr850k for sales. While it's good to see the insider buying, the net amount bought isn't enough for us to gain much confidence from it.

Does Saab Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Saab insiders own 0.3% of the company, worth about kr219m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Saab Insiders?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest Saab insiders are well aligned, and quite possibly think the share price is too low. Nice!
