Market Cool On Netel Holding AB (publ)'s (STO:NETEL) Earnings Pushing Shares 26% Lower
Netel Holding AB (publ) (STO:NETEL) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 26% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 60% loss during that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, Netel Holding's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 22x and even P/E's above 39x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Netel Holding could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Netel Holding's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 65%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 39% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 62% per annum during the coming three years according to the dual analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 20% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we find it odd that Netel Holding is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What We Can Learn From Netel Holding's P/E?
The softening of Netel Holding's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Netel Holding currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
