Even With A 43% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Bittnet Systems SA's (BVB:BNET) Performance Completely
Bittnet Systems SA (BVB:BNET) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 43% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 27% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies operating in Romania's IT industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.9x, you may still consider Bittnet Systems as an attractive investment with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Bittnet Systems Has Been Performing
For example, consider that Bittnet Systems' financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Bittnet Systems' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 158% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 3.9% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it odd that Bittnet Systems is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Despite Bittnet Systems' share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Bittnet Systems revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
