There May Be Underlying Issues With The Quality Of Telestrada's (WSE:TLS) Earnings
Telestrada SA (WSE:TLS) just reported some strong earnings, and the market reacted accordingly with a healthy uplift in the share price. However, we think that shareholders may be missing some concerning details in the numbers.
Examining Cashflow Against Telestrada's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Telestrada has an accrual ratio of 0.33 for the year to June 2025. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, raising questions about how useful that profit figure really is. To wit, it produced free cash flow of zł3.9m during the period, falling well short of its reported profit of zł9.71m. Notably, Telestrada had negative free cash flow last year, so the zł3.9m it produced this year was a welcome improvement. Having said that, there is more to the story. The accrual ratio is reflecting the impact of unusual items on statutory profit, at least in part.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
The fact that the company had unusual items boosting profit by zł1.6m, in the last year, probably goes some way to explain why its accrual ratio was so weak. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. If Telestrada doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.
Our Take On Telestrada's Profit Performance
Telestrada had a weak accrual ratio, but its profit did receive a boost from unusual items. For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at Telestrada's statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Telestrada at this point in time. When we did our research, we found 3 warning signs for Telestrada (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that we believe deserve your full attention.
