For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like DG-Net (WSE:DGN), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

DG-Net's Improving Profits

Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So it's easy to see why many investors focus in on EPS growth. It is awe-striking that DG-Net's EPS went from zł0.015 to zł0.18 in just one year. While it's difficult to sustain growth at that level, it bodes well for the company's outlook for the future. Could this be a sign that the business has reached an inflection point?

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. DG-Net shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 1.9% to 10%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Since DG-Net is no giant, with a market capitalisation of zł9.0m, you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are DG-Net Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Theory would suggest that it's an encouraging sign to see high insider ownership of a company, since it ties company performance directly to the financial success of its management. So as you can imagine, the fact that DG-Net insiders own a significant number of shares certainly is appealing. To be exact, company insiders hold 85% of the company, so their decisions have a significant impact on their investments. This should be seen as a good thing, as it means insiders have a personal interest in delivering the best outcomes for shareholders. Of course, DG-Net is a very small company, with a market cap of only zł9.0m. So this large proportion of shares owned by insiders only amounts to zł7.6m. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.

Does DG-Net Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

DG-Net's earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders should certainly brighten the view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point, so there's a potential opportunity to be had here. Based on the sum of its parts, we definitely think its worth watching DG-Net very closely. Still, you should learn about the 5 warning signs we've spotted with DG-Net (including 3 which are a bit concerning).
