Take Care Before Jumping Onto S4E S.A. (WSE:S4E) Even Though It's 26% Cheaper

The S4E S.A. (WSE:S4E) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. The good news is that in the last year, the stock has shone bright like a diamond, gaining 126%.

Even after such a large drop in price, S4E's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.4x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Poland, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 13x and even P/E's above 23x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

S4E certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

S4E's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 43%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 832% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 14% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's peculiar that S4E's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On S4E's P/E

S4E's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of S4E revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.

Having said that, be aware S4E is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit concerning.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking at a few good candidates. So take a peek at this free list of companies with a strong growth track record, trading on a low P/E.
