Market Cool On Suntech S.A.'s (WSE:SUN) Revenues Pushing Shares 31% Lower
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Suntech S.A. (WSE:SUN) share price has dived 31% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 65% loss during that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, Suntech's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Software industry in Poland, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.5x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Suntech's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Suntech over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Suntech's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 6.5%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 51% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 7.6% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it odd that Suntech is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Suntech's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We're very surprised to see Suntech currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
