M4B S.A. (WSE:M4B) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 38% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 61% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that M4B's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Software industry in Poland, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has M4B Performed Recently?

Revenue has risen firmly for M4B recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. Those who are bullish on M4B will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

M4B's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 18% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 141% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 7.4%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

In light of this, it's curious that M4B's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From M4B's P/S?

M4B's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We didn't quite envision M4B's P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
