The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that Marvipol Development S.A. (WSE:MVP) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. How Healthy Is Marvipol Development's Balance Sheet?
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Marvipol Development had liabilities of zł615.7m due within 12 months and liabilities of zł372.4m due beyond that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of zł237.0m as well as receivables valued at zł24.3m due within 12 months. So its liabilities total zł726.7m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

Our View
On the face of it, Marvipol Development's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow left us tentative about the stock, and its level of total liabilities was no more enticing than the one empty restaurant on the busiest night of the year. But on the bright side, its interest cover is a good sign, and makes us more optimistic. Looking at the balance sheet and taking into account all these factors, we do believe that debt is making Marvipol Development stock a bit risky. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but we'd generally feel more comfortable with less leverage. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt.
