There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About Gremi Media's (WSE:GME) Returns On Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Gremi Media (WSE:GME) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Gremi Media, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.067 = zł8.0m ÷ (zł147m - zł29m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
Thus, Gremi Media has an ROCE of 6.7%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Media industry average of 17%.

So How Is Gremi Media's ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Gremi Media, we didn't gain much confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 6.7% from 10% five years ago. On the other hand, the company has been employing more capital without a corresponding improvement in sales in the last year, which could suggest these investments are longer term plays. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
On a related note, Gremi Media has decreased its current liabilities to 20% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
The Bottom Line
Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by Gremi Media's reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. And in the last five years, the stock has given away 64% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. In any case, the stock doesn't have these traits of a multi-bagger discussed above, so if that's what you're looking for, we think you'd have more luck elsewhere.
On a final note, we found 3 warning signs for Gremi Media (2 are a bit unpleasant) you should be aware of.
