Grupa Kety's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, the company's dividend was higher than its profits, and made up 82% of cash flows. This indicates that the company could be more focused on returning cash to shareholders than reinvesting to grow the business.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 21.8% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, our estimates say the payout ratio could reach 94% - on the higher side, but we wouldn't necessarily say this is unsustainable.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was PLN10.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was PLN62.50. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 20% per annum over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
Grupa Kety Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Grupa Kety has impressed us by growing EPS at 15% per year over the past five years. However, the payout ratio is very high, not leaving much room for growth of the dividend in the future.
Grupa Kety's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. We don't think Grupa Kety is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
