It's Down 26% But Pacific Edge Limited (NZSE:PEB) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks
The Pacific Edge Limited (NZSE:PEB) share price has softened a substantial 26% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 35% in the last year.
Following the heavy fall in price, Pacific Edge may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in New Zealand have P/S ratios greater than 9.5x and even P/S higher than 39x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Pacific Edge Has Been Performing
For instance, Pacific Edge's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Pacific Edge's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 96% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 9.9% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Pacific Edge's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Shares in Pacific Edge have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Pacific Edge revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. Potential investors that are sceptical over continued revenue performance may be preventing the P/S ratio from matching previous strong performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
