Norbit's (OB:NORBT) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Norbit ASA (OB:NORBT) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of NOK3.00 on the 16th of May, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 2.2%.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Norbit's stock price has increased by 33% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Norbit's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 21.5% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 35% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Norbit Is Still Building Its Track Record
It is great to see that Norbit has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2020, the annual payment back then was NOK0.30, compared to the most recent full-year payment of NOK3.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 58% per annum over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Norbit has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 21% per annum. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.
We Really Like Norbit's Dividend
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Norbit is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
