Norbit's (OB:NORBT) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

Norbit ASA's (OB:NORBT) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to NOK2.55 on 16th of May. The payment will take the dividend yield to 2.1%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Norbit's stock price has increased by 32% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Norbit's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Prior to this announcement, Norbit's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 89.7% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 6.3%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Norbit Is Still Building Its Track Record

Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. The dividend has gone from an annual total of NOK0.30 in 2020 to the most recent total annual payment of NOK1.55. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 51% per annum over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see that Norbit has been growing its earnings per share at 23% a year over the past five years. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.

We Really Like Norbit's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Norbit is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
