Shareholders Shouldn’t Be Too Comfortable With Elkem's (OB:ELK) Strong Earnings
Strong earnings weren't enough to please Elkem ASA's (OB:ELK) shareholders over the last week. We did some digging and found some underlying numbers that are worrying.
We've discovered 1 warning sign about Elkem. View them for free. The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
For anyone who wants to understand Elkem's profit beyond the statutory numbers, it's important to note that during the last twelve months statutory profit gained from kr665m worth of unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Elkem had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to March 2025. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
An Unusual Tax Situation
Just as we noted the unusual items, we must inform you that Elkem received a tax benefit which contributed kr574m to the bottom line. This is meaningful because companies usually pay tax rather than receive tax benefits. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal.
Our Take On Elkem's Profit Performance
In the last year Elkem received a tax benefit, which boosted its profit in a way that might not be much more sustainable than turning prime farmland into gas fields. Furthermore, it also benefitted from a positive unusual item, which boosted the profit result even higher. For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at Elkem's statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks.
