Shareholders Of Aker Solutions (OB:AKSO) Must Be Happy With Their 144% Total Return
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Aker Solutions ASA (OB:AKSO) share price is up 92% in the last year, clearly besting the market return of around 35% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 69% in the last three years.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Aker Solutions was able to grow EPS by 58% in the last twelve months. We note, however, that extraordinary items have impacted earnings. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 92% increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Aker Solutions' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for Aker Solutions shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 144%, over the last year, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Aker Solutions has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 144% in the last twelve months. That certainly beats the loss of about 7% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Aker Solutions .
