Is Now The Time To Put Arcadis (AMS:ARCAD) On Your Watchlist?

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Arcadis (AMS:ARCAD). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Arcadis' Improving Profits

In the last three years Arcadis' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Impressively, Arcadis' EPS catapulted from €1.27 to €2.25, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 77%.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. Arcadis maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 8.1% to €5.0b. That's a real positive.

Are Arcadis Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of Arcadis, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold €36m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 0.6% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Arcadis, with market caps between €3.6b and €11b, is around €2.3m.

Arcadis' CEO took home a total compensation package worth €1.7m in the year leading up to December 2023. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does Arcadis Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Arcadis' earnings have taken off in quite an impressive fashion. An added bonus for those interested is that management hold a heap of stock and the CEO pay is quite reasonable, illustrating good cash management. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. Arcadis is certainly doing some things right and is well worth investigating.
