YTL Power International Berhad (KLSE:YTLPOWR) Is Increasing Its Dividend To MYR0.04
The board of YTL Power International Berhad (KLSE:YTLPOWR) has announced that the dividend on 29th of November will be increased to MYR0.04, which will be 14% higher than last year's payment of MYR0.035 which covered the same period. This takes the annual payment to 2.2% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. YTL Power International Berhad's stock price has reduced by 33% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

YTL Power International Berhad's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. However, prior to this announcement, YTL Power International Berhad's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 1.7% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 15%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from MYR0.10 total annually to MYR0.07. This works out to be a decline of approximately 3.5% per year over that time. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. We are encouraged to see that YTL Power International Berhad has grown earnings per share at 47% per year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
YTL Power International Berhad Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that YTL Power International Berhad is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
