Atta Global Group Berhad (KLSE:ATTA) Is Reinvesting At Lower Rates Of Return
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Atta Global Group Berhad (KLSE:ATTA) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Atta Global Group Berhad:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.015 = RM5.7m ÷ (RM436m - RM49m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
So, Atta Global Group Berhad has an ROCE of 1.5%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Metals and Mining industry average of 14%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
In terms of Atta Global Group Berhad's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 1.5% from 2.1% five years ago. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
The Bottom Line
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Atta Global Group Berhad is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. These growth trends haven't led to growth returns though, since the stock has fallen 60% over the last five years. So we think it'd be worthwhile to look further into this stock given the trends look encouraging.
