Dialog Group Berhad (KLSE:DIALOG) Stocks Pounded By 27% But Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing

The Dialog Group Berhad (KLSE:DIALOG) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 37% share price drop.

Even after such a large drop in price, Dialog Group Berhad may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 24.6x, since almost half of all companies in Malaysia have P/E ratios under 13x and even P/E's lower than 8x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Dialog Group Berhad's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Dialog Group Berhad's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 41%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 41% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 23% each year as estimated by the twelve analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.5% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Dialog Group Berhad's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

Even after such a strong price drop, Dialog Group Berhad's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Dialog Group Berhad's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
