Techna-X Berhad (KLSE:TECHNAX) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 32% gain in the last month alone. Looking further back, the 25% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Techna-X Berhad's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Malaysia's Hospitality industry is similar at about 1.5x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Techna-X Berhad Performed Recently?

For example, consider that Techna-X Berhad's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

Techna-X Berhad's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 14%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 225% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 3.5% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that Techna-X Berhad is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Techna-X Berhad's P/S

Techna-X Berhad's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We didn't quite envision Techna-X Berhad's P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to see the likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
