Did You Participate In Any Of MAKUS' (KOSDAQ:093520) Fantastic 121% Return ?
Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. To wit, the MAKUS share price has climbed 92% in five years, easily topping the market return of 58% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 43% in the last year , including dividends .

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, MAKUS achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 16% per year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 14% average annual increase in the share price. That suggests that the market sentiment around the company hasn't changed much over that time. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, MAKUS' TSR for the last 5 years was 121%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
MAKUS' TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 43%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 17% per year. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with MAKUS .
