Did You Miss PC Direct's (KOSDAQ:051380) Impressive 259% Share Price Gain?
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. One great example is PC Direct, Inc. (KOSDAQ:051380) which saw its share price drive 259% higher over five years. It's also good to see the share price up 16% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 8.2% in 90 days).

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the five years of share price growth, PC Direct moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. Indeed, the PC Direct share price has gained 174% in three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 24% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 40% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So one can reasonably conclude the market is more enthusiastic about the stock than it was three years ago.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between PC Direct's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that PC Direct's TSR of 277% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that PC Direct shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 56% over one year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 30%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand PC Direct better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for PC Direct (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
