Revenues Not Telling The Story For SOLiD, Inc. (KOSDAQ:050890) After Shares Rise 30%
Despite an already strong run, SOLiD, Inc. (KOSDAQ:050890) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 30% in the last thirty days. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 9.6% isn't as impressive.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about SOLiD's P/S ratio of 1.2x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Communications industry in Korea is also close to 1x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has SOLiD Performed Recently?
Revenue has risen at a steady rate over the last year for SOLiD, which is generally not a bad outcome. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to only match most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like SOLiD's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 2.7% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 86% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 42% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it interesting that SOLiD is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
What Does SOLiD's P/S Mean For Investors?
SOLiD's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
We've established that SOLiD's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's hard to accept the current share price as fair value.
