Did The Underlying Business Drive DAEA TI's (KOSDAQ:045390) Lovely 332% Share Price Gain?
Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. Just think about the savvy investors who held DAEA TI Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:045390) shares for the last five years, while they gained 332%. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. And in the last week the share price has popped 6.9%. But this could be related to the buoyant market which is up about 2.8% in a week.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, DAEA TI actually saw its EPS drop 33% per year. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
The modest 0.3% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 6.3% per year is probably viewed as evidence that DAEA TI is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for DAEA TI the TSR over the last 5 years was 341%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
DAEA TI shareholders gained a total return of 21% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 35% over five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
