P&H Tech Co., Ltd.'s (KOSDAQ:239890) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 29% Slump
P&H Tech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:239890) shares have had a horrible month, losing 29% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 30% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, P&H Tech's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26.3x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 12x and even P/E's below 6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, P&H Tech has been very sluggish. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will turn things around completely and accelerate past most others in the market. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, P&H Tech would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 41%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 33% per annum during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 20% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that P&H Tech's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
Even after such a strong price drop, P&H Tech's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that P&H Tech maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
