ALT Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:172670) May Have Run Too Fast Too Soon With Recent 25% Price Plummet
ALT Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:172670) shares have retraced a considerable 25% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 64% loss during that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking ALT is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.1x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Semiconductor industry have P/S ratios below 1.2x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How ALT Has Been Performing
For instance, ALT's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, ALT would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 23%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 12% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 30% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
In light of this, it's alarming that ALT's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Key Takeaway
Despite the recent share price weakness, ALT's P/S remains higher than most other companies in the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Our examination of ALT revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
