S&S Tech Corporation (KOSDAQ:101490) May Have Run Too Fast Too Soon With Recent 30% Price Plummet
S&S Tech Corporation (KOSDAQ:101490) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 30% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 90%, which is great even in a bull market.
Even after such a large drop in price, S&S Tech's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.9x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 7x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
S&S Tech certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For S&S Tech?
S&S Tech's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 41% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 159% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 34% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we find it interesting that S&S Tech is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends would weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price drop, S&S Tech's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of S&S Tech revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look similar to current market expectations. When we see average earnings with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
