The three-year decline in earnings for EO Technics KOSDAQ:039030) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 323% over that period
We think that it's fair to say that the possibility of finding fantastic multi-year winners is what motivates many investors. You won't get it right every time, but when you do, the returns can be truly splendid. One bright shining star stock has been EO Technics Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:039030), which is 314% higher than three years ago. It's also good to see the share price up 30% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 28% in 90 days).
In light of the stock dropping 5.7% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive three-year return.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over the last three years, EO Technics failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 19% (annualized).
Thus, it seems unlikely that the market is focussed on EPS growth at the moment. Therefore, we think it's worth considering other metrics as well.
Languishing at just 0.2%, we doubt the dividend is doing much to prop up the share price. The revenue drop of 12% is as underwhelming as some politicians. The only thing that's clear is there is low correlation between EO Technics' share price and its historic fundamental data. Further research may be required!

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for EO Technics the TSR over the last 3 years was 323%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that EO Technics shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 126% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 22% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with EO Technics , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
