Why SHIFT UP's (KRX:462870) Earnings Are Weaker Than They Seem
Despite posting strong earnings, SHIFT UP Corporation's (KRX:462870) stock didn't move much over the last week. We looked deeper into the numbers and found that shareholders might be concerned with some underlying weaknesses.
A Closer Look At SHIFT UP's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Over the twelve months to September 2025, SHIFT UP recorded an accrual ratio of 0.39. Ergo, its free cash flow is significantly weaker than its profit. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of ₩147b, which is significantly less than its profit of ₩192.3b. At this point we should mention that SHIFT UP did manage to increase its free cash flow in the last twelve months Having said that, there is more to the story. The accrual ratio is reflecting the impact of unusual items on statutory profit, at least in part.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that SHIFT UP's profit was boosted by unusual items worth ₩26b in the last twelve months. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Assuming those unusual items don't show up again in the current year, we'd thus expect profit to be weaker next year (in the absence of business growth, that is).
Our Take On SHIFT UP's Profit Performance
SHIFT UP had a weak accrual ratio, but its profit did receive a boost from unusual items. Considering all this we'd argue SHIFT UP's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. While conducting our analysis, we found that SHIFT UP has 2 warning signs and it would be unwise to ignore them.
Our examination of SHIFT UP has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. And, on that basis, we are somewhat skeptical.
