On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But if you choose that path, you're going to buy some stocks that fall short of the market. Over the last year the Hanil Cement Co., Ltd. (KRX:300720) share price is up 12%, but that's less than the broader market return. Hanil Cement hasn't been listed for long, so it's still not clear if it is a long term winner.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over the last twelve months, Hanil Cement actually shrank its EPS by 37%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

Unfortunately Hanil Cement's fell 11% over twelve months. So using a snapshot of key business metrics doesn't give us a good picture of why the market is bidding up the stock.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Hanil Cement's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. We note that Hanil Cement's TSR, at 18% is higher than its share price return of 12%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

Hanil Cement shareholders have gained 18% for the year. The bad news is that's no better than the average market return, which was roughly 32%. However, that falls short of the 35% gain it has made, for shareholders, in the last three months. It's worth taking note when returns accelerate, as it can indicate positive change in the underlying business, and winners often keep winning. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Hanil Cement (at least 2 which are a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
