Poongsan Holdings Corporation (KRX:005810) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 34% in the last quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. In fact, the share price is down 27% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Poongsan Holdings saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 37% per year, over the last three years. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 10% compound annual share price fall. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Poongsan Holdings' TSR for the last 3 years was -17%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Poongsan Holdings provided a TSR of 24% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 3% per year over five year. This suggests the company might be improving over time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 4 warning signs for Poongsan Holdings (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
