When you see that almost half of the companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Korea have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.3x, TCC Steel Corp. (KRX:002710) looks to be giving off some sell signals with its 2.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How TCC Steel Has Been Performing

For instance, TCC Steel's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on TCC Steel's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is TCC Steel's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as TCC Steel's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's top line. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 41% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 13% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that TCC Steel's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Nevertheless, they may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From TCC Steel's P/S?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We didn't expect to see TCC Steel trade at such a high P/S considering its last three-year revenue growth has only been on par with the rest of the industry. Right now we are uncomfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
