Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By S&D Co., Ltd's (KOSDAQ:260970) Earnings Despite 37% Price Jump
The S&D Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:260970) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 37%. The annual gain comes to 154% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.
Even after such a large jump in price, S&D may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.9x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios greater than 11x and even P/E's higher than 22x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for S&D as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, S&D would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 80% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 131% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 34% shows it's about the same on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's peculiar that S&D's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain recent growth rates.
What We Can Learn From S&D's P/E?
S&D's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of S&D revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look similar to current market expectations. When we see average earnings with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for S&D that you need to be mindful of.
