There's Reason For Concern Over Sonid Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:060230) Massive 27% Price Jump
Those holding Sonid Inc. (KOSDAQ:060230) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 63% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think Sonid's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Chemicals industry is similar at about 0.7x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Sonid Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Sonid over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Sonid's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.8%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 24% in total. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 11% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Sonid's P/S is comparable to that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
What Does Sonid's P/S Mean For Investors?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Sonid's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Sonid revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, the probability of a share price decline will become quite substantial, placing shareholders at risk.
