Soulbrain Holdings Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:036830) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 27% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Soulbrain Holdings Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:036830) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Soulbrain Holdings' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 12x and even P/E's above 23x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
For example, consider that Soulbrain Holdings' financial performance has been pretty ordinary lately as earnings growth is non-existent. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this benign earnings growth rate will likely underperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Soulbrain Holdings would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's bottom line as the year before. Although pleasingly EPS has lifted 46% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 36% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we can see why Soulbrain Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Soulbrain Holdings' P/E?
Soulbrain Holdings' recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Soulbrain Holdings maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
