Revenues Not Telling The Story For Sambo Industrial Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:009620) After Shares Rise 34%

Sambo Industrial Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:009620) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 34% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 13% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Sambo Industrial's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Metals and Mining industry in Korea, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Sambo Industrial's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Sambo Industrial over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Sambo Industrial's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 25% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 21% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 2.2% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that Sambo Industrial is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Sambo Industrial's P/S

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Sambo Industrial's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

The fact that Sambo Industrial currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
