Shareholders in Amorepacific (KRX:090430) are in the red if they invested three years ago
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term Amorepacific Corporation (KRX:090430) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 34% in three years, versus a market decline of about 8.0%. Furthermore, it's down 28% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Amorepacific actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 63% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.
It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price.
With a rather small yield of just 0.7% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. Arguably the revenue decline of 11% per year has people thinking Amorepacific is shrinking. And that's not surprising, since it seems unlikely that EPS growth can continue for long in the absence of revenue growth.

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Amorepacific shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 15% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 3% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Amorepacific (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
