Earnings growth of 7.2% over 3 years hasn't been enough to translate into positive returns for AMOREPACIFIC Group (KRX:002790) shareholders

AMOREPACIFIC Group (KRX:002790) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 25% in the last quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. Truth be told the share price declined 49% in three years and that return, Dear Reader, falls short of what you could have got from passive investing with an index fund.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for AMOREPACIFIC Group isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, AMOREPACIFIC Group actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 23% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.

It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price.

The modest 0.7% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. Arguably the revenue decline of 10% per year has people thinking AMOREPACIFIC Group is shrinking. After all, if revenue keeps shrinking, it may be difficult to find earnings growth in the future.
