DIO Corporation (KOSDAQ:039840) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 10% in the last month. But that is minimal compensation for the share price under-performance over the last year. In fact the stock is down 13% in the last year, well below the market return.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unfortunately DIO reported an EPS drop of 41% for the last year. The share price fall of 13% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have expected earnings to drop faster. With a P/E ratio of 49.61, it's fair to say the market sees an EPS rebound on the cards.

A Different Perspective

Investors in DIO had a tough year, with a total loss of 13%, against a market gain of about 47%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.6% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that DIO is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
