If You Had Bought Daou Technology (KRX:023590) Stock A Year Ago, You Could Pocket A 99% Gain Today
Diversification is a key tool for dealing with stock price volatility. Of course, in an ideal world, all your stocks would beat the market. One such company is Daou Technology Inc. (KRX:023590), which saw its share price increase 99% in the last year, slightly above the market return of around 96% (not including dividends). However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 15% in the last three years.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Daou Technology was able to grow EPS by 135% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 99% increase in the share price. So it seems like the market has cooled on Daou Technology, despite the growth. Interesting. The caution is also evident in the lowish P/E ratio of 4.04.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
It is of course excellent to see how Daou Technology has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on Daou Technology's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Daou Technology, it has a TSR of 104% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Daou Technology shareholders have received returns of 104% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 5% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
